Yet more bickering dominates Greenwood’s three-hour town marathon meeting

GREENWOOD TWP.—The gloves came off again in Greenwood as Preponderance Past triggered a back-and-forth volley with Preponderance Present at last Thursday’s town meeting in Greenwood.
The fuse was lit when previous board member Sue Drobac questioned various payments made by the township and went on to level criticisms against town clerk Debby Spicer. This has actually been a monthly pattern since the people of Greenwood decisively ousted the previous board’s majority in March, an effort which critics say is a not-so-veiled attempt to obstruct any progress the current board hopes to achieve. Quite audibly the room of forty or so residents groaned their displeasure at the many interruptions from Preponderance Past. “Are these the important issues?” asked resident Jet Galonski.
The back-and-forth continued for close to two hours as chair Lois Roskoski attempted to maintain order, frequently having to use her gavel to quell the arguments. Roskoski, who from the moment she became chair has made no secret of her intention to not align herself with either side, finally said, “Why aren’t we all trying to work together? We all ran to do what is best for Greenwood,” adding, “I just want everybody to be respectful. We have a lot of work to be done.”
It would do well for the board—and the other combatants—to read Galonski’s letter to the editor found elsewhere in this edition of The Tower News to get a grasp of how important it is for the township to find a way to work together.
Despite the mayhem, the three hour meeting did manage to plod through the night’s agenda. Highlights include:
  • It was pointed out that the financial report still lacked Schedule 1 which needs to be reconciled with the bank reconciliation.
  • Both motions to approve claims and payroll were unanimously approved as was a motion for the annual move of $2,000 from the General Fund to the Trail Fund.
  • The motion to table the Capital Replacement Plan was carried 5-0.
  • In new business, a resolution deeming Birch Pointy Road Extension as Township Road 4136 was not adopted (1-4) but agreed to contact the township’s attorney regarding platted road beyond the specs.
  • Regarding the job duties of the Fire Department’s administrative assistant (chair Roskoski wanted to know specifically what the job entails), a motion was made to give a written exit interview to the now-departed holder of that position.
  • The Fire Department’s Performance Evaluation Forms for both the Fire Chief and employees were approved.
  • The board discussed the township’s internal control policy and segregation of duties.
  • The motion to transfer funds from the Town Road Fund to the General Fund to patch potholes was approved 5-0.
  • The board agreed 5-0 to table the amendments to Paid On Call Policy.
  • Motion to have the cleaning person shampoo the town hall’s carpets carried 5-0.
