A U.S. Border Patrol agent was shot and killed in the line of duty earlier this week while defending America’s border with Canada.
David “Chris” Maland served as a U.S. Border Patrol agent protecting America’s northern border along Vermont, New Hampshire, and New York. A Minnesota native, Maland was killed during a traffic stop in Vermont on Monday afternoon.
Following the incident, the FBI released a statement saying, “At approximately 3:15 p.m. on Monday, January 20, U.S. Border Patrol Agent David ‘Chris’ Maland was involved in a traffic stop on Interstate 91 southbound near mile marker 168. During the course of the traffic stop, an exchange of gunfire occurred, and Agent Maland was struck.”
A subject involved in the altercation was also killed, and another subject was injured and taken to a local hospital. The FBI did not release the identities of the subjects but said the deceased subject was a German national in the U.S. on a current visa.
The FBI said its investigation into the shooting “remains extremely active.”
“Every single day, our Border Patrol agents put themselves in harm’s way so that Americans and our homeland are safe and secure. My prayers and deepest condolences are with our Department, the Agent’s family, loved ones, and colleagues,” said Acting Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman.
Born and raised in southern Minnesota, Maland was a U.S. Air Force veteran and former U.S. Marshal. In addition to this service, Maland worked as an independent contractor providing special security detail to the Pentagon and the White House.
During Wednesday’s floor session of the Minnesota House of Representatives, Rep. Krista Knudsen, R-Lake Shore, spoke about her cousin’s service and sacrifice.
“[Chris] will be remembered for his courage and commitment to protecting fellow Americans,” said Knudsen. “He is also a person who served faithfully with honor and bravery. He always put his service above himself.”
During her remarks, Knudsen noted that Maland’s death marks the first time a U.S. Border Patrol agent has been killed in over 10 years.
“Chris was an incredible man and will be missed dearly,” added Knudsen. “I am grateful for his service, and I know he was very proud of it. Our family is heartbroken. He died in the line of duty, serving to protect our country. We will cherish his memories and mourn his sacrifice. Until we meet again, Godspeed you good and faithful servant.”
