Marilyn Hutchinson Skare
Marilyn H. Skare, age 88, of Tower, MN, and formerly Golden Valley, MN, passed away peacefully with her husband, Robert (“Bob”), by her side on November 25, 2020. They had been married for over 66 years. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Clarissa and Marshall Hutchinson, and her son, Robertson Skare.
In addition to successfully raising four rambunctious boys, Marilyn co-founded Hennepin County Food Shelves back in 1970 and ran Westhaven Lodge on Lake Vermilion for over 25 years, starting in 1979. In the 1950s she was a synchronized swimmer at the University of Minnesota and was a performer with the famed Aqua Follies on Worth Lake in Minneapolis. She was an active member of Westwood Lutheran Church in St. Louis Park, teaching Choir and Sunday School in the 1960s and 1970s. She and her husband were also members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Soudan, MN.
Besides spending many fun summers and winters with her family on Lake Vermilion, Marilyn loved traveling with Bob, taking many trips all around the world, and she also loved doing many activities with her family, including skiing, hiking and backpacking, playing tennis and volleyball, swimming, fishing and jogging. She even participated in the 4th of July Vermilion 10-K Run several times, usually winning in her gender and age group.
Her faith in God was a big part of her life, and it was reflected in everything she did. She always had a positive outlook that she freely and joyfully shared with her family and friends. She has left quite a loving legacy with her family, which they will carry on, and she will be deeply missed.
She is survived by husband, Robert; sons, Randolph (Debra), Rodger (Karin) and Richard (Kristin); grandchildren, Katie, Michael, Eric, Kylie, Lauren (Brian) Ferry, Anna, Charleena, Samuel and Martin; brother, Marshall Lawrence (Constance) Hutchinson and many nephews and nieces.
A private funeral service for her family only was held at noon on Wednesday, December 2nd at Washburn-McReavy Funeral Home, in Edina, MN. Her interment was held thereafter at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis.
