DISCUSSION
Issued at 152 PM CST Sun Jan 5 2025
High pressure continues to keep much of the Northland sunny and cold
today, with some areas of lake effect clouds and flurries over
portions of northern Wisconsin. Some variety of high pressure and
cold temperatures is expected to stick around at least through mid
week. Much drier air pushes in through the day Monday which, despite
robust temperature differences between air and Lake Superior water
temperatures, is likely to shut off lake effect snow for a brief
period. As a slightly more moist airmass pushes across the Great
Lakes Tuesday into Wednesday, the Lake Effect 2000 should turn back
on, with light accumulations possible for the South Shore. Looking
at an inch or less for the Bayfield Peninsula and 1-2 inches
possible for northern Iron County with this forecast update.
Across the rest of the Northland, expect a fluctuation between partly
cloudy and sunny conditions through Thursday, with no precipitation
expected. Global models continue to show a weak shortwave pushing
across the Northern Plains and Upper Great Lakes Thursday through
Friday, which could bring some light snow to the area. Still a big
mix in the 12z set of data on if anything will actually come of out
of this disturbance, with most solutions on the low end for
accumulations of zero to a half inch. We are just barely starting to
see some run-to-run consistency on the existence of this feature, so
confidence is still low. There are hints of another shortwave that
could possibly bring some snow next weekend into early next week,
but uncertainty is even higher for that system.
AVIATION
Issued at 1105 AM CST Sun Jan 5 2025
Mostly VFR conditions persist through the period. There may be some
MVFR ceilings near HYR that could at times graze the terminal.
Breezy northerly winds should calm through this afternoon, staying
light into Monday.
MARINE /FOR NEAR SHORE WATERS OF WESTERN LAKE SUPERIOR
Issued at 152 PM CST Sun Jan 5 2025
Northwest to north winds continue into early this week. Gusts of 20
to 30 knots are possible, primarily along the North Shore, with
small craft advisories continuing. The strongest gusts are expected
overnight and into the morning hours each day. Winds may switch
around and come out of the south in the second half of the week.
