DISCUSSION
Issued at 153 AM CST Fri Dec 27 2024
A low-pressure system moving into central Wisconsin will bring
widespread rainfall after a period of drizzle and dense fog this
morning. Cooling surface temperatures near or slightly above
freezing and a shrinking layer of above-freezing air aloft may
cause light snow to mix with rain tonight into Saturday.
Precipitation will taper off Saturday afternoon and evening as
the system exits into northern Ontario.
This system brings unusually high moisture for late December,
with PWAT values of 0.6-0.75″. Most precipitation will be rain,
especially today into tonight, with totals ranging from 0.1-0.4″
in north-central Minnesota to 0.5-0.8″ in east-central
Minnesota, northwest Wisconsin, and the Twin Ports, with the
highest amounts near Lake Superior and the North Shore. Snow
mixing in will be light, with up to 0.25″ mainly in far northern
Minnesota.
Sunday through Monday night should stay dry as the low-
pressure system lingers over northern Ontario. A shortwave
trough early next week will keep precipitation south of the
region.
By midweek, colder air moving in from Canada should trigger
lake-effect snow along the South Shore, driven by colder
northwest winds and a relatively warm Lake Superior.
Temperatures will cool to near-normal highs in the upper teens
to mid-20s by Tuesday and Wednesday.
AVIATION
Issued at 535 AM CST Fri Dec 27 2024
Widespread LIFR will occur through this TAF period. Visibility
should drop to VLIFR 10-16Z Friday. Drizzle continues as deeper
moisture moves in this morning associated with a low pressure
system lifting northward. Rainfall chances increase after 18Z.
Areas of rainfall are expected to help mix out lower
visibilities with visibilities lifting to IFR after 00Z Sat.
Winds shift from southerly to easterly through the TAF period
and remain fairly light < 20kt gusts.
MARINE /FOR NEAR SHORE WATERS OF WESTERN LAKE SUPERIOR
Issued at 153 AM CST Fri Dec 27 2024
Western Lake Superior winds remain below 20 knots today with
winds turning easterly by sunrise. Wind gusts do increase to
around 20 to 25 knots tonight for parts of the North Shore which
could be accompanied by 2 to 5 foot waves. A Small Craft
Advisory may be needed early Saturday. Other than that, fairly
quiet on the marine front.
