KEY MESSAGES…
– Temperatures much warmer than normal and dry conditions continue
for Monday.
– A cold front will bring another round of showers and a few
embedded thunderstorms across the Northland on Tuesday. Mix
and snow are possible in our far north then overnight.
– Near normal temperatures will follow the front for the rest of
the week, with a couple more chances for light showers.
DISCUSSION…
Issued at 218 PM CDT Sun Oct 20 2024
We will sit under this upper level ridge for Monday and into
Tuesday. Highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s are making it feel
like summer rather than fall. Dry conditions will also continue
through Monday. Patchy fog is possible tonight near sunrise, but
warmer low temperatures and drying lower levels may prevent fog
from forming away from lakes.
The upper level closed low that`s been stationary in the
southwest CONUS will move northeast with a trough further north
in Canada Monday night. A surface cold front will bring chances
for showers starting Tuesday morning and lasting into Wednesday.
PWATs are not very high, but are still around an inch along the
cold front. Upper level support along with a couple hundred
J/kg of MUCAPE along the front increase the chances for embedded
thunderstorms within the showers for Tuesday daytime hours. As
the cold front moves through that evening, the cold air mass and
any lingering precipitation in the Arrowhead, Iron Range, or
Borderlands could see a few flakes by Wednesday morning.
However, due to the ground`s warm temperature, it is likely that
any snow that falls will melt quickly into Wednesday morning.
More seasonal temperatures will follow the system on Wednesday,
with highs in the 40s. Overall, the jet streak will remain along
the Canadian border, keeping a relatively cooler airmass over
the Upper Midwest. While we will see a warm up, this one will
only have highs in the 50s, less than 10 degrees above normal.
Another weak cold front will dive south into the area, but the
global models are in disagreement on coverage of precipitation
along the front.
