Kalevala Day Celebration

VIRGINIA–Kalevala Day Celebration honoring the culture of Finland will be held on Saturday, March 2, at 1 p.m., at Kaleva Hall in Virginia. There will be a telling of the Kalevala tale, Sampo: The Magic Mill, and a historic rendition of the Magic Mill itself. Steve Solkela will entertain with Finnish music. The Ladies and Knights of Kaleva will be in Finnish costumes. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome. If you have a Finnish costume, wear it.

Piatigorsky Foundation concerts

COOK–Two Piatigorsky concerts will be performed in Cook on Thursday, March 7. At 1 p.m. a concert will be held at North Woods School and a concert for the public will be held at 7 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church. These musicians are traveling, world class performers from the Piatigorsky Foundation.

The Piatigorsky Foundation is dedicated to making live classical music an integral part of everyday life for communities throughout the United States. Gregor Piatigorsky, the renowned Russian cellist for whom the organization is named, believed that music is not a luxury for an elite few, but a necessity of life for all.

Since 1990, The Piatigorsky Foundation has presented more than 3,775 performances, introducing the joy of live classical music in communities throughout the country.

They differ from traditional arts organizations in that they perform in non-traditional venues and present music in a highly communicative format that is geared to each particular audience.

County seeks Public Health Achievement award nominees

ST. LOUIS COUNTY—St. Louis County Public Health is seeking nominations from the public to recognize individuals or groups who have made significant effort to improve the health of residents or communities in St. Louis County. The Public Health Achievement Awards will be presented during the St. Louis County Board meeting on Tuesday, April 2.

Winners will be selected based on their leadership, public health contributions, community health improvement outcomes, collaboration and advocacy. The deadline to submit a nomination is Friday, March 8.

TSHS Board meeting

BREITUNG— The Tower-Soudan Historical Society Board of Directors will be having their monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 13, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Breitung Community Center in Soudan.

The meeting is open to the public, and guests are welcome.

8th District MSHS 2024 scholarships now available

REGION—Several scholarships for $500 or more will be available from the 8th District Minnesota State Horticultural Society for 2024. A scholarship applicant must be a graduating senior residing or attending school in the 8th District, or a non-traditional student, college student or second time winner who will be attending a college or technical school within one calendar year; there are no restriction as to course or school.

The counties in the 8th District include Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, and St. Louis. The applicant must provide evidence of an interest and participation in horticultural/gardening activities, such as a home garden, organized group such as 4-H, Scouts, church, community gardens, or through their school.

Application must be received by Friday, March 15, 2024. The winning recipients will be invited to the 8th District MSHS spring meeting to be held on Saturday, April 20, at the Eveleth Armory.

Host a foreign exchange student

STATEWIDE—World Heritage International Student Exchange Program, a non-profit, public benefit organization, is seeking local families to host foreign exchange students this coming school year. World Heritage students come from a variety of countries worldwide including: Italy, Denmark, Spain, France, Germany, Ukraine, Japan and Australia. Students are between the ages of 15 and 18, and are enthusiastic and excited to experience American culture, family life, school, sports. etc. Host families may be single parents, couples, or single persons.

The exchange students have pocket money for personal expenses and full health, accident, and liability insurance. World Heritage students are carefully selected based upon academics and personality, and host families choose their student from different backgrounds, countries and personal interests.
