Alex Plechash was elected Saturday as the new chair of the Republican Party of Minnesota, ousting incumbent chair David Hann from party leadership.
A current Wayzata City Council member, Plechash was elected by the State Central Committee after three rounds of voting, according to reports from those in attendance. Donna Bergstrom was reelected as deputy chair and Joy Orvis will replace Jenna Dicks as party secretary.
Minnesota House Speaker-designate Lisa Demuth, R-Cold Spring, congratulated the party’s new leadership on social media.
Hann, a former state senator, was first elected chair in October 2021 following the resignation of Jennifer Carnahan. He was reelected in December 2022.
Plechash has been involved in Minnesota politics since 2004, serving in roles such as precinct chairman, congressional district vice chair, and RNC committeeman. He is a veteran and a graduate of both the U.S. Naval Academy and University of Chicago.
The Minnesota DFL did not congratulate Plechash on his election but instead attributed his victory to “far-right activists.”
