DISCUSSION
Issued at 1007 PM CST Wed Mar 5 2025
Snow continues to taper off over northwest Wisconsin. Lake-
effect snow showers and flurries will persist over northern Iron
and portions of Ashland counties through the early morning
hours. With negligible additional accumulation expected, the
Winter Storm Warning was allowed to expire.
Looking ahead to Thursday morning, a strong cold front will dive
southeastward across the Northland starting before sunrise in
north-central Minnesota. Upstream observations over SW and SCent
MB reveal snow showers accompanying the front. We updated the
forecast for the frontal passage through late Thursday morning
to include a mention of snow showers. Dauphin, MB (CYDN)
reported visibility as low as 1 mile in snow showers. There may
be enough instability pooling along the front to generate more
vigorous snow showers. Visibility may drop as low as 1/2 mile
for brief periods where snow showers occur. Snow squalls remain
possible north of US-2. By late morning or early afternoon,
diurnal heating and deepening of the boundary layer should
generate enough dry air to allow the snow showers to sublimate
before reaching the ground. Winds will be gusty behind the front
and blowing snow may develop in open areas.
PREV UPDATE…Issued at 600 PM CST Wed Mar 5 2025
Extended the Winter Storm Warning for Iron County until 10 PM.
Light snow will continue for the next few hours. An additional 2
inches of snow is forecast over northern portions of the county.
The warning for Bayfield and Ashland counties will expire at 6
PM.
AVIATION
Issued at 600 PM CST Wed Mar 5 2025
Skies continue to clear as the low pressure system departs. Look
for VFR and decreasing winds overnight. A fast-moving cold front
will dive southeastward across the region Thursday. MVFR
ceilings may return and there is a chance of snow showers. IFR
visibility is likely in the snow showers although there is only
a 20 percent chance of showers affecting INL, HIB, or DLH. INL
will have the best chance of MVFR ceilings associated with the
front as moisture will be a bit higher in that area. West and
northwest winds will be gusty during the day.
MARINE /FOR NEAR SHORE WATERS OF WESTERN LAKE SUPERIOR
Issued at 255 PM CST Wed Mar 5 2025
Gales to 40 knots will remain possible through mid-evening
before diminishing through the overnight hours. Stronger winds
may linger a bit longer along the North Shore from Silver Bay to
Grand Portage. While the gales end this evening, Small Craft
Advisories will likely be needed into the early morning hours
following the gales along parts of the North Shore and the Outer
Apostle Islands. Northwesterly winds will become westerly
tomorrow at around 20 knots or less. A few stronger gusts to 25
knots will be possible across the Outer Apostle Islands Thursday
afternoon, but this looks to be a relatively short window. Winds
then remain northwesterly to westerly for Thursday night and
Friday at 20 knots or less.
